Hidy do, Mr. Arthur.
You haven't been carried out yet, so
You must still be in that sad house.
Why haven't you run off?
Maybe you've got nowhere to
Run off to.
Hold your head high
And don't get it shot off
For the knot-hole.
It's filled up,
So your pocket watch
Is the biggest gift we got.
We walked on eggs for you
Appreciate everything from you
You wrapped around us...
Thanks.

This poem is related to the second letter they tried to give to Boo Radley. I'd imagine that Jem wrote it in school the day the hole was filled up. Scout read it later, signed it, and planned to deliver it to Boo if they could get to his doorstep, but they ultimately chose not to. Years later (post-book), an older Scout discovered the poem. She subsequently entered it in a poetry contest and got 3rd place, which she split with Jem 20/80. They both have medals and copies of the poem still.
ReplyDeleteOr at least, that's what happened in my mind, and what this is supposed to be is a longer thank you to Arthur Radley.
I like the style of the peon, as if it's what the kids would say to Boo if they could try again with the letter. This is probably something like they would really say, and makes sense and fits in with the story.
ReplyDeleteOops! 🤦♂️ I wrote poen! My finger slipped. I meant poem! 😅🤣
DeleteI noticed that the quotes you used were connected with Boo in the book. The backstory explaining the letter is great as well.
ReplyDeleteI liked the way you wrote it from the perspective of the children.
ReplyDeleteThis is a cool way to write the second letter, and it is a nice way to thank Boo.
